Moving on from the visionary statements to the meat and potatoes, it was confirmed that Intel's first volume 10nm processor, code-named Ice Lake, will being shipping in June.

Intel expects its 7nm process technology to deliver 2x scaling, approximately 20 percent increase in performance per watt with a 4 times reduction in design rule complexity. Having acquired or developed loads of different IP in the recent years, Intel pins a lot of hopes on its diversified product portfolio that will complement next-gen Xeons.

Intel also provided the first details of Intel's 7nm chips, which will mark the company's first use of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography.

"It would be better for enterprises if Intel succeeds in this as it will keep processor costs down, which is critical given the CPU-intensive loads required by AI and machine learning technology that powers most next generation apps", Mueller said.

The 7nm-based processor is expected to arrive sometime in 2021.

Intel is now chasing a total addressable market that is worth almost $300 billion, the CEO pointed out, which is a drastic increase from its previous $52 billion market that was largely made up of processors for client computers and servers. On the heels of Intel's first discrete GPU coming in 2020, the 7nm general goal GPU is expected to launch in 2021.

Renduchintala acknowledged that 10nm left "a major gap" in Intel's process roadmap, which the company responded to by extracting more from its 14nm technology, resulting in two rounds of optimizations in 14+ and 14++.

That positions Intel as a smaller player in a bigger market.

However, Swan said, the company is not satisfied with the progress it has made in transitioning away from a PC-centric company to one that is centered around data-centric solutions.

Swan also said Intel's operating margins would remain at a steady 32% over the next three years, though gross margins would decline as it ramps up production of its 10nm chips.

By 2022 or 2023, the company expects annual revenue to reach up to about $85 billion and net earnings to reach $6 per share, according to the CEO.

The stock drop was likely sparked by concerns about the sheer scope of Intel's plans going forward and doubts over whether or not it's really up to the tasks it has set itself, Charles King of Pund-IT Inc. told SiliconANGLE. "But at the same time, Intel has steadily demonstrated singular business and technical leadership qualities for decades".
