Legendary American actress and singer Doris Day has died aged 97 after contracting pneumonia, her foundation has confirmed.

In a statement, the Doris Day Animal Foundation said she died on Monday at her home in Carmel Valley, California.

Her screen partnership with Rock Hudson was one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1950s and '60s. Her first hit, "Sentimental Journey", in 1945, was recorded while serving as the vocalist in Les Brown's band.

Her wholesome beauty and ultra-bright smile has been described as standing for a time of innocence in films, a parallel world to her contemporary Marilyn Monroe.

Doris began her career as a singer, with her breakthrough hit "Sentimental Journey" being re-recorded several times over her career, and she became one of the highest-paid vocalists in the United States in the 1950s.

By the mid-'70s, she withdrew from the limelight to focus on animal rights and set up the Doris Day Animal League and Doris Day Animal Foundation. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1922, Day went on to become a star of the Classical Hollywood era, beginning with her role in 1948's Romance On The High Seas. Day also starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), in which she famously sang "Que Sera Sera".

Day celebrated her 97th birthday on just ten days ago on April 3. CBS's 1968-73 The Doris Day Show never rose above the level of being a poor man's Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Day herself was highly critical of it. "Still don't. I think it's a phony name", Day said more than 30 years later. She had her only son, Terrence Paul Jorden, with her first husband, Al Jorden. That song and "Que Sera Sera" would be her biggest hits. Terry died in 2004 of melanoma, after a long illness.

Her last film was "With Six You Get Eggroll", a 1968 comedy about a widow and a widower and the problems they have when blending their families. But she resisted Hollywood overtures.

Thankfully, in 1974, the actress won a $22.8 million judgment against her lawyer and business manager Jerome B. Rosenthal for mishandling her's and Melcher's assets.
