At 8.6 ounces, Saybie weighed nearly seven grams less than the previous smallest surviving newborn, who was born in Germany in 2015.

Doctors said that apart from Saybie's fighting spirit, her survival as a micro preemie - a baby born before 28 weeks' gestation - could be attributed to the fact that she suffered no serious complications after birth.

In a statement, the team at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns said the baby now weighed around five pounds.

The baby girl, named Saybie, weighed just 8.6 ounces, or 245 grams - roughly the size of an apple - at the time of her birth at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital in San Diego.

After the birth, the hospital's advanced life support team and neonatologist Dr. Paul Wozniak worked to stabilize Saybie before she was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit, according to the hospital.

The hospital said the baby's family gave permission to share their story but wished to remain anonymous. She weighed seven grams less than the previous smallest newborn, a girl born in Germany in 2015.

Saybie is going home just two months after the world's smallest baby boy went home.

Charging Trump was not option, says Robert Mueller
House Democrats want Mueller to testify publicly, though no date or arrangements have been set, and it's not clear that he will. Constitution "requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting president of wrongdoing".

But "we can not rule out even smaller infants who have not been reported to the Registry", he said in an email to The Associated Press.

She said she was taken to the hospital, where she was told she had preeclampsia and very high blood pressure and that the baby needed to be delivered quickly.

At first, doctors were not confident Saybie would defy the odds, telling the baby's parents to start preparing for the worst: Saybie's father was told he would have about an hour with her before she would die.

His dad, Jamie Florio, 29, told The Post at the time, "I didn't really believe he was coming home until we took him to the vehicle and brought him to the house".

Saybie is a fighter, her nurses said.

It shows photos of Saybie wearing a mint bow with white polka dots that covered her entire head, her tiny eyes peering out from under it.

She nonetheless will still face enormous challenges as a micro-preemie, including possible respiratory, hearing and vision problems. "But that hour turned into two hours, which turned into a day, which turned into a week". Babies typically are born at 40 weeks.
