Facebook announced at its F8 conference today a new feature to its Dating repertoire, this one apparently created to help single minglers poach potential paramours from their Friends by adding them to an ostensibly private list of people you're crushing on.

"As the world gets bigger and more connected, we need that sense of intimacy more than ever". This is apparently changing in the not-so-distant future, as Facebook plans to introduce end-to-end encryption in Messenger. Numerous announcements at F8 this year have emphasized this push.

Facebook shares were trading down 0.3 percent on Tuesday.

He identified private messaging, short-lasting stories and small groups as the fastest-growing areas of online communication. In the last three years, the number of people using Facebook's WhatsApp has nearly doubled.

They said anything in Facebook Dating will not be used outside of the feature at all and it will not affect ads or what users see in News Feed algorithm. In the wake of its scandals, the company has spent heavily on tools to catch banned material.

The social media company is now working on "LightSpeed" in order to make its Messenger app smaller in size and faster. Today at its F8 conference, Facebook announced a bunch of improvements coming Messenger's way, including a much lighter [iOS] mobile app and a desktop client.

Additionally, the company is launching a desktop version of the app, available for both Windows and MacOS.

Beyond the enhancement to security, Facebook is planning to make the app dramatically better over the course of the year. Facebook says that it was "completely rebuilt from the ground up on an entirely new code base", which seems promising.

"I know that we don't exactly have the strongest reputation on privacy right now, to put it lightly", Zuckerberg said on Tuesday. These effectively load the browser functionality in something that at least looks like a native app. "I think we've shown time and again that we can as a company build the things that people want".

But the company is no longer adding many new users in the United States and Europe, its most lucrative markets, and it must find additional sources of revenue if it is to sustain growth. The goal of Secret Crush is to help you connect to people with whom you are already friends. Stories, images, and videos shared with each other will apparently show up here, but specifics on this now unnamed feature were pretty light.

For users, it'll mean chats can carry on in one app, regardless of whether you're friends with a person on Facebook, a contact on WhatsApp, or follow each other's photos on Instagram.

Facebook had delayed rolling out certain products at last year's F8 event, which came soon after revelations it inappropriately shared information belonging to 87 million users with now-defunct British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.

The network claimed the move came after people told them they believe there's an opportunity to explore potential romantic relationships within their own extended circle of friends and those using Secret Crush will be able to select up to nine existing connections to express interest in.

As part of Facebook Dating - previously only available in Colombia, Thailand, Canada, Argentina, and Mexico - Secret Crush will now also be available in 14 new countries: the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guyana, and Suriname.

You'll notice the changes right away when looking at the images here.

Just as the new mobile app is still a work-in-progress, so Facebook's other Messenger changes are still in the pipeline.
