E-cigarette flavourings increase risk of heart attack, study warns

Vaping raises risk of heart attack or stroke due to chemicals found in flavoring liquid Vape flavourings may pose heart risk - study

She said, "The remarkable thing was there were very strong effects, both in terms of the specific mechanisms they looked at and that the effects were not very different between cells from e-cigarette smokers and cigarette smokers".

According to the study, the e-cig users turned to numerous same cessation aids as regular cigarette smokers; about a quarter sought support from family and friends, and 11% turned to counseling or self-help materials.

Human iPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be hard to isolate directly from a patient.

Exposing the cells to flavourings from e-cigarettes or blood from people who'd just vaped triggered blood vessel dysfunction that could increase the risk of heart disease.

Lab-grown endothelial cells were more likely to die off or suffer from impaired function when exposed to e-cigarette vapor, the researchers reported. Among the flavors, the cinnamon and menthol seemed to pose the biggest threat to the viability of the endothelial cells, the researchers report.

Until now, we had no data about how these e-liquids affect human endothelial cells.

Professor Wu added: "The public has this notion that e-cigarettes are safe".

Critics of e-cigarettes say that while the products were initially billed as a somewhat safer way to smoke than traditional cigarettes - a claim that's come into question - many manufacturers have marketed the e-products aggressively to youthful users.

Berube says Dunn could return for Game 2
The Blues shot out to an early hot start, but were eventually doomed by discipline issues and a fiery Bruins comeback. The Bruins ultimately shook off the rust and started to play their game, and that's when the tide turned.

The researchers investigated the effect of six different popular e-liquid flavors - fruit, tobacco, sweet tobacco with caramel and vanilla, sweet butterscotch, cinnamon, and menthol - with nicotine levels of 0, 6, and 18 milligrams per milliliter on endothelial cells derived from human iPS cells.

Research performed at the Stanford University School of Medicine discovered that - among several flavours tested - cinnamon and menthol flavours are the most damaging.

Many people use e-cigarettes believing they provide a safer alternative to smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes, but some of the same dangers may still apply.

"As a result of this perception, a lot of kids pick up e-cigarette smoking", Wu said. Doing so allowed them to closely observe the effect of the flavorings with and without nicotine on the cells' biology and function.

The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells.

The findings, published online by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, showed that exposure to the e-liquids also increased the relative levels of reactive oxygen species - molecules that can cause DNA damage - and the levels of molecules associated with cell death.

According to the team of researchers, while e-cigarettes may be associated with reduced harm as compared to combustible cigarettes, they also are potentially addictive and the e-cigarette aerosol still contains toxic substances.

USA public health officials are alarmed by an explosion of underage vaping, but Dr Wu said it's not just a question for teens.
