More than 300 tornadoes have ravaged the US Midwest in the last two weeks during an unusual onslaught of extreme weather - the average for the entire month of May is around 280.

The winds peeled away roofs - leaving homes looking like giant dollhouses - knocked houses off their foundations, toppled trees, brought down power lines and churned up so much debris that it was visible on radar.

The Ohio Department of Transportation asked drivers to avoid Interstate 75 north of downtown Dayton because of debris scattered on the highway. Towns just outside Dayton, Ohio, took some of the heaviest hits.

The service tweeted Tuesday morning that to send reports of outages via social media or email if possible.

This latest storm comes after tornadoes and flood waters killed at least six people in Oklahoma over the weekend, including two people in El Reno, near the state capital, on Saturday.

Almost 80 people in and around Dayton went to hospitals with injuries, said Elizabeth Long, a spokeswoman for the Kettering Health Network.

It comes as lawmakers from both parties agreed to a deal on May 23 for a $19.1 billion disaster-relief package.

In Twitter posts, Trump described the overnight storms across OH and other states as "very unsafe and damaging", and noted that his administration is looking into helping those suffering from the extreme weather.

"My team continues to update me with reports from emergency managers in the States affected".

"My Administration fully supports the people of the great State of OH as they begin the cleanup and recovery", Trump said.

Less than 24 hours later, a vicious storm tore through the Kansas City area, spawning more tornadoes that damaged homes and injured at least 12 people.

The National Weather Service said the OH twister was a preliminary EF3 rating on the scale.
