At the time, Hollinger owned a stable of publications including The Telegraph in London, the Chicago Sun-Times, and a chain of Canadian newspapers including the National Post, which he founded. In 2007, Black was convicted of fraud and obstruction of justice after diverting millions from the sale of Hollinger newspapers.

While two counts were later overturned, Black spent more than three years in prison before being released in 2012.

The statement said Lord Black had made "tremendous contributions to business", had written books on history and served as a tutor while in prison.

President Donald Trump has pardoned a media mogul who just so happened to author a book gushing about the Trump presidency. The White House said the experience "changed his life" and formed his later career as a conservative advocate for criminal justice revisions, including with the First Step Act, the criminal justice bill Trump signed into law a year ago.

He wrote a column Thursday in Canada's National Post describing how Trump called him and revealed the pardon.

Black describes his "ordeal with the US justice system" as "never anything but a confluence of unlucky events, the belligerence of several corporate governance charlatans, and grandstanding local and American judges", followed with intensity because he was a media owner.

Lord Black wrote that Mr Trump told him he was granting clemency because his conviction was an "unjust verdict".

He said he initially thought he was being pranked when he was told he had a call from the White House, but he picked and heard Mr Trump ask: "Is that the great Lord Black?"

Black, the other recipient of a pardon Wednesday evening, is a former news publisher who was convicted on four counts of fraud in 2007. He then pursued a partially successful appeal, in which a judge cut his sentence down to 42 months. The statement also noted that Black is "the author of several notable biographies", but didn't mention the glowing book Black published about Trump a year ago.

"Lord Black's case has attracted broad support from many high-profile individuals, who have vigorously vouched for his exceptional character", the White House statement reads.

Nolan has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform since he spent more than two years in federal prison during the 1990s.
