A day after knocking out 11-time Barcelona victor Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, the third-seeded Austrian claimed his second title in four events after beating Roger Federer at Indian Wells last month.

Although Thiem made a slower start than anticipated in Barcelona against Medvedev, once he gets into his rhythm, he is very hard to knock off his stride.

Thiem told www.atptour.com: "Winning this means a lot to me because it's such a traditional and special tournament".

"Paris is still pretty far away, I'm happy with my clay form right now, this is actually my biggest clay title - this one here", said Thiem, who lost to Nadal in last year's French Open final.

The Russian proved his Monte Carlo run wasn't a fluke as the following week he made the Barcelona final, where he was beaten by 2018 French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem. Looking at all the names who have won it I'm very happy and proud that my name is also there now.

"I had troubles at the start", Thiem said. He's hard to play, risky from the baseline.

Thiem has become a clay court specialist, and with nine of his 13 ATP Tour titles coming on the surface, he is a force to be reckoned with.

"First of all, it is one of the best [events] during the year - I really love to come here".

Thiem will now have a few days off prior to the start of the next big date of the pre-Roland Garros calendar, the Madrid Masters.
