Apple Appointed Intel 5G Lead Seems Long-Term Plans in 5G Technology

First, The Information reports he was the driving force behind Apple's in-house 5G modem efforts - because yes, it seems that Apple is trying to design its own 5G modem to compete with Qualcomm. Adding insult to injury, Apple poached Intel's lead 5G engineer in February.

The decision was announced nearly immediately after Apple and chipmaker arranged Qualcomm in a long-running lawsuit.

However, all that came to a surprise halt as Apple and Qualcomm agreed to drop all lawsuits against each other earlier this month.

Intel's executives Messay Amerga and Abhay Joshi reveal in an internal email that, "Mr Thyagarajan had "played a key role" in the Intel chip that featured in last year's iPhones and he had been the project engineer on developing its 5G chip, known as XMM 8160". By coming to a settlement, Apple can once again tap Qualcomm to build 5G modems for its mobile devices, which unfortunately for Apple's previous 5G hardware lead, could mean his job is no longer necessary. However, profitability might not have been the sole concern for Intel.

But it was not a real story, weeks before Apple-Qualcomm settlement; Intel lost a main engineer in-charge of its 5G modems to Apple.

North Carolina university on lock down following reports of active shooter
The university's website had a banner alert warning about an " active assailant ", saying, "Campus lockdown continues". The campus was reportedly about to host a concert at the school's football stadium at the time of the shooting.

Intel's ongoing struggles with readying its 5G chips may have pushed Apple to work it out with Qualcomm, ultimately leading Intel to bow out of this business altogether.

Meanwhile, Intel had already announced its intention to exit the 5G smartphone modem business.

Intel had been dealing with a chipset for the iPhone maker, with the chip expected to be a part of iPhones by 2020.

A 5G-equipped iPhone with a faster and more reliable cellular internet connection could give consumers a reason to upgrade from older models as iPhone sales growth stalls.
