Ultra-Low Emission Zone introduced to London

New pollution charge begins in London New pollution charge begins in London

The world's first ultra low emission zone has come into force across central London heralded by environmental campaigners as a ground breaking step in the fight against air pollution.

It's been heavily criticised by business leaders over the impact they say it will have on firms.

It will operate on a 24/7 basis and provide for the imposition of a charge of £12.50 per day for cars, vans and motorbikes affected and £100 per day for lorries, buses and coaches.

The ULEZ is part of London Mayor Sadiq Khan's campaign to clean up London's manky air, and is predicted to reduce road emissions by nearly half.

"However, more supportive measures are needed, from all sectors, to make real progress on this issue; this would include stronger government commitment to air quality/zero emission vehicle ambitions, cheaper lower emission vehicles alongside incentives to help reduce their cost and a strategic network of publicly accessible charge points that can give consumers the confidence to move away from diesel and petrol fuelled cars", added Cooper.

Alex Williams, TfL's director of planning, said: "The ULEZ will almost halve road based nitrogen dioxide emissions in central London, reducing air pollution which has led to thousands of premature deaths in the capital and stunted the development of children's lungs".

Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell, also welcomed the ULEZ on behalf of the Assembly and said the zone is important to "drive out polluting vehicles from choking our city". The retailer has committed to 100% zero-emission last-mile deliveries in five major cities by 2020 - and recently reached this goal in Shanghai one year early.

"The fundamental issue we have with ULEZ access being based upon Euro standards alone is that is not an efficient or fair way to address the problem of urban NOx emissions from vehicles, since over-emitting newer Euro 6 cars will be allowed in, yet older, lower-emitting Euro 5 cars will attract penalty fines".

During the daytime from Monday to Friday, most motorists must also pay an 11.50-pound congestion charge to enter the same area, which spans King's Cross in the north, the City in the east, the Imperial War Museum in the south and Buckingham Palace in the west.

"In many cases, they will be able to manage their costs better by leasing or hiring a compliant auto, van or truck".

In a survey of 2,000 across the UK, Nissan found that only one in three were aware of the ULEZ going live from today, yet nearly half of all respondents support the daily charge's introduction.

"The ULEZ is the centerpiece of our plans to clean up London's air - the boldest plans of any city on the planet, and the eyes of the world are on us".

The ULEZ is only in the central London Congestion Charge zone for now, but it'll be expanding to the entire area within the North and South circulars in late 2021. Operators and vehicle manufacturers have already led the way with investment in cleaner technologies through developments in engine standards; this has helped to reduce levels of key pollutants more than 20-fold over recent years.
