E-cigarettes use a small battery to heat nicotine-laced liquid into a vapor, which is inhaled much like a conventional cigarette. The agency is seeking details about vaping brands and models and whether users who have experienced problems were also taking medications, supplements or other drugs.

The investigation comes after at least 35 people reported seizures - uncontrolled and sudden convulsive brain disturbances - after using electronic cigarettes over the past decade, according to a Vox report.

In a statement, the FDA stressed that it does not know yet if there is a direct relationship between vaping and seizures.

The cases go back to 2010, with a noticeable uptick in reports beginning mid-2018. The agency said because the reports were voluntary, it's possible there may be more cases of e-cigarette users suffering from seizures.

U.S. regulators said yesterday they are investigating reports that e-cigarettes - increasingly widespread in America and elsewhere - may cause seizures.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that vaping may increase the risk of seizures in young people. "These risks are among the many reasons why we so strongly believe that no child should be using any tobacco product".

"Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine poisoning and have been reported in scientific literature in relation to intentional or accidental swallowing of nicotine-containing e-liquids", FDA Commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb said in an agency news release. There could be other factors that contributed to the patients' seizures, such as the use of other drugs. The seizures didn't occur at the same point in time after vaping - some happened after a few puffs, and others up to a day after using an e-cigarette.

Vaping devices confiscated from students at a school in MA. The FDA notes that some e-cigarettes have designs that allow users to obtain high levels of nicotine quickly. The new FDA warning "will result in the medical community now adding e-cigarettes and what was in them, and how much was used, to that list of things we will specifically ask about when assessing someone who has had a seizure", he said. In most instances, the victims were teens and young adults.
