Pink Moon set to illuminate the skies on Friday

A Magnificent Full Flower Moon Will Illuminate Vancouver’s Skies Next Month A 'pink moon' is coming: What you need to know

Astronomers will look to the skies today, hoping to catch a glimpse of the yearly "pink moon" - the full moon for April. The April Full Moon will begin shortly after midday, and while the name says "Pink moon", the moon won't appear literally pink.

April's full moon was nicknamed the "pink moon" by Native Americans for the pink wild ground phlox, however when it rises Friday morning, it won't be pink.

The Pink Moon follows the trend of naming moons based on agricultural schedules set by early farmers that used cues from the Moon for a variety of things, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

The moon is occasionally pink, but the main reason for the name is due to the pink flowers that have arrived since the start of spring.

"In ancient times, it was common to track the seasons by the lunar calendar". Those who are not able to look up and see the full moon rise on Thursday night will have a second chance.

"That means that, from some places worldwide, the moon turns full before dawn on April 19". Although the Lyrids will peak on April 22-23, they will already be active on Friday. So wait a few days for the moon to be a little less glamorous, and you may get lucky enough to see little pieces of Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher that have been observed for more than 2,600 years.

Observers should also see a special treat the next morning.

It's also the right time for the beginning of the Lyrid meteor shower.

The "Flower Moon" will occur on May 18 in the afternoon. Despite the moon appearing huge, the full moon is not a good time for astronomical observation as most of the moon's shadows vanish.
