Orlando Magic vs. Toronto Raptors, 4/16/19 NBA Predictions & Odds

Rick Zamperin: Toronto Raptors show what they’re really made of Leonard scores 37, Lowry has 22 as Raptors rout Magic 111-82
Shannon Reynolds | 17 April, 2019, 21:41

Lowry came out flying and finished the game with 22 points, 7 assists and 2 three-pointers on 61.5% shooting.

Lowry's loudest supporters, on the other hand, pointed to him being plus-11 and argued that his contributions should never be judged exclusively on makes and misses. Despite the win, early books opened Orlando at +8.5 for tonight's Game 2 - a number that immediately drew the attention of bettors. They've been doing their best work at the defensive end, where they've been using the fact that they don't really have any weak links to force Orlando into choosing the least disgusting of many bad options to try to score, and that's generated plenty of turnovers and held Nikola Vucevic, fresh off his first All-Star season, to 36.0% true shooting thus far in the series. If you want to talk about what needs to be done to improve if you're them, I would say you're going to look at their defensive game and say: That's a game that's going to win most nights. "Tonight he was charging up the floor and pushing the ball, passing, shooting, driving, kicking, made steals, hands on everything, rebounded".

Though Leonard reveals virtually no emotion in his postgame remarks, his sparse comments offer insights into how he assembles the sort of performance that paced the Raptors on Tuesday night. "At this point in the season, you do whatever you need to do, whether it's 3-0 or 0-2 or 2-1, 3-1, whatever it is". All-star centre Nicola Vucevic was limited to six points.

Kyle Lowry, who had gone without a point in Game 1, rebounded with a 22-point night on 8-of-13 shooting, along with seven assists, while Pacal Siakam had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Raps will fly to Orlando on Thursday for Games 3 and 4, which take place Friday and Sunday. "We know how this feels", Clippers guard Patrick Beverly said after the win.

Toronto's quality first half built them a modest 12-point advantage with momentum on their side.

USING THE FORCE: Orlando is one of the top defensive teams in the NBA - No. 1 in the last third of the season, according to some metrics - and held Toronto about 17 points below its season average in Game 1.

Gordon and Ross were the only Orlando players putting up significant numbers, and the Raptors took a healthy 51-39 lead into the locker-room.

Kawhi Leonard led the team with 25 points and six rebounds while Pascal Siakam added 24 points and nine rebounds.

The Raptors were ahead by 12 points at halftime and took a 24-point lead into the fourth quarter. As a team, the Magic shot 14 of 29 from the arc, which is definitely higher than usual.

Despite the weirdness that was his spotty availability this year as the Raptors managed the quad injury that held him out for most of 2017-18, Leonard and Toronto were excellent during the regular season. The Toronto Raptors are allowing 36.5 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 43.5 rebounds per game.

The Magic have covered the spread in four of their last five road games and 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 games against a team with a winning record. Game 2 was more of the same, a credit to the physicality and defence of Marc Gasol, who has looked to make things hard for the Magic's big man. The Raptors should spam this combination ad nauseam for the remainder of the series.

Game 1 looks to have been an anomaly, as Orlando is a much better team when its big man gets going.

82 points is the third-lowest scoring total for the Magic this season, while that's the least amount of points Toronto has given up this season.

Leonard had four of Toronto's first five points in Game 2. Former Raptor Terrence Ross had 15 points.
