The no small matter of a Section 30 order, which Sturgeon again reiterated that she believed was necessary to have a legally binding referendum like in 2014, is a hurdle that still must be overcome.

The First Minister resisted calls from the SNP to call an earlier referendum and said if a vote happened before the Brexit path was determined it would not allow for an "informed decision" to be made.

Ms Sturgeon said in January that she would set out her timetable for another vote in a "matter of weeks", but remained tight-lipped in light of ongoing Brexit uncertainty at Westminster.

The First Minister's official spokesman promised the 30-minute update to the Scottish Parliament would be "detailed and substantive" as she sets out her "thoughts on independence and how that relates to where the country now finds itself".

Today's statement was the "first available opportunity" for the first minister to update MSPs since the European Union granted a six-month extension to the Article 50 Brexit process.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said: "The First Minister hasn't done the one decent thing that people in Scotland want her to do, which is to make it stop and take her campaign for independence off the table".

"I consider that a choice between Brexit and a future for Scotland as an independent, European nation should be offered in the lifetime of this Parliament".

The SNP has led campaigns for a second referendum on Brexit, and have repeatedly complained that Theresa May's government has ignored Scotland's needs during the negotiation of her Brexit agreement, particularly by promising to crack down on migration and leave the EU's single market.

She added: "Those who oppose independence are of course entitled to argue that case, but it must be for the people to decide".

"If this can not be achieved, dealing with the consequences of Brexit. will be unavoidable". "The case for Scottish independence is stronger than ever".

'Astonishingly, the way Nicola Sturgeon thinks we can come together is for Scotland to be plunged into another divisive referendum within the next 18 months. Ardent supporters of a breakaway say the turmoil provides the opportunity to rally the nationalist troops, though her government has been focusing on trying to keep all of the United Kingdom within the EU's customs arrangements and single market.

"Instead of respecting that result, Nicola Sturgeon continues to press for divisive constitutional change when it is clear that most people in Scotland do not want another independence referendum", he said.

"If we are successful in further growing the support and the demand for independence. then no United Kingdom government will be able to stop the will of the people", she said.

The United Kingdom voted 52-48 to leave the European Union in a 2016 referendum, but while Wales and England vote to leave, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

Richard Leonard, the Scottish Labour leader, said Sturgeon's statement was designed primarily to placate her party's restless membership, whom she will address at the Scottish National party's spring conference in Edinburgh on Sunday.
