Garbine Muguruza successfully defended her Monterrey title Sunday in Mexico when her opponent, Victoria Azarenka, retired down 6-3, 3-1 with a right calf injury.

For former world No 1 and two-time Grand Slam victor Azarenka, it was her first final in three years, after giving birth and being embroiled in a custody battle for her son.

Azarenka was grimacing and stretching after almost every point and, after Muguruza broke for a 3-1 lead, the two-time Australian Open champion chose to call it quits. "I would love him to be here to share this with me because it is special".

Muguruza collects her first title since winning Monterrey a year ago, and the seventh of her career.

The end was in sight early in the second set after Azarenka received treatment during a medical timeout - the Belarusian eventually calling time on her title tilt following 66 minutes of play.

Keys' previous two losses to Wozniacki had been on hard courts when she failed to win a set. "It was an important match to see how I could do under pressure against a top player", Azarenka said.

In the second set, Muguruza again took a 4-1 lead.

Puig did not go quickly in the final game, though, saving three match points before Keys hit a big forehand return on a fourth match point to force an error from Puig. "I knew I had to go for it".

She'd pump her fists, win her crosscourt battles with Azarenka as she appeared controlled to defeat the Belarusian in the second set 6-4.

"It's definitely been a really great week for me, especially after having some really tough losses the last couple of weeks", Keys said.

"To be able to really bounce back and have a good week of training with my coach, and then come and win the tournament, is definitely a very good springboard for heading over to Europe".
