Rep. Tom Reed on Tuesday criticized the Save the Internet Act that House Democrats are supporting to restore net neutrality, a concept that everyone with internet access shoud have equal access to online content.

The bill is expected to pass through the Democrat-controlled House, but its fate in the Republican-controlled Senate is less certain.

"This legislation is a big-government solution in search of a problem", Ajit Pai, the chairman of the FCC, said in a statement after the bill's passage Wednesday. "I believe in an open and free internet that everyone can use.Taking this heavy approach that the Democrats have proposed will only limit people from using the full extent of the internet".

The bill has pretty much no chance whatsoever of becoming law. Oral arguments in the case, Mozilla versus the FCC, were heard in February. Both states agreed to hold off on enforcing their laws until after a federal court rules on the validity of the FCC's repeal of the former rules.

"Last year, the FCC returned to the light-touch regulatory scheme that enabled the internet to develop and thrive for almost two decades by promoting the internet freedom and encouraging network investment", the White House's statement read.

The Senate passed the Congressional Act (CRA) in May 2018 to restore net neutrality rules, which is "an obscure legislative tool" introduced by Sen.

USTelecom, a trade group, said internet providers support net neutrality protections but oppose the 2015 FCC order that reclassified the internet as a utility-style service that handed the FCC sweeping authority to regulate it.

In the absence of an explicit ban on these actions, providers are required to publicly disclose any instance of blocking, throttling or paid prioritization. "The proposal of the Democrats is governmental control and dictation of the internet".

The net neutrality bill mirrors an effort past year to reverse the FCC's order, approved on a 3-2 vote, that repealed rules barring providers from blocking or slowing internet content or offering paid "fast lanes".
