The Ministry of Health revealed that the last case of indigenous measles in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean occurred in 1991, but cases have been imported here over the years.
Measles is a disease that can often be fatal. The state's health commissioner says most cases have been traced to global travelers returning from Israel and Europe, which have seen a recent surge in measles cases. Currently, New York's MMR vaccination rate is at 91.1 percent, below the 94 percent requirement to achieve herd immunity. This is the epicenter of a measles outbreak that is very, very troubling and must be dealt with immediately.
This is not to say that there is a correlation between being Jewish and contracting measles. Likewise, poorer countries that can not afford to vaccinate their citizens experience bursts of diseases. Herd immunity protects members of the population who are too young or too sick to get immunized.
"This outbreak is being fueled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighborhoods", Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot said in statement. People born before January 1, 1969 are likely to be immune as measles were rather common, therefore this older age group does not need measles immunisation. Before a vaccine was developed in 1963, 3 million to 4 million Americans came down with the measles each year, leading to 48,000 hospitalizations, 1,000 cases of encephalitis and 400 to 500 deaths. Measles is highly contagious, and nine out of 10 people who are not immune and are exposed to measles will become infected.
