Aranda's criminal record includes two convictions in 2015 for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, as well as convictions for fifth-degree assault, trespassing and damage to property. Aranda also was accused of walking into a mall store and sweeping his hand across a display table, breaking glasses.

He was accused three months later of throwing glasses of ice water and tea at a woman in a restaurant at the mall after she refused to buy him food, the records show. He had two previous trespass notices ordering him to stay away from the Mall of America, according to the Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis.

A source at the scene tells WCCO that the person who threw, or possibly pushed, the child fled the mall and was apprehended near the light rail station.

Officers responded to the incident at 10:17 a.m. Friday.

The child's family is at the hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Witnesses said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, either pushed or threw the 5-year-old boy on Friday morning from the third level of the Bloomington mall's interior to the first-level floor almost 40 feet below, police said. Tina Hailey told the publication she was rounding the corner when she heard a woman screaming, "Oh my god, pray for my son".

"At this point we believe this is an isolated incident", Potts said.

In an unrelated incident in August of the same year, witnesses saw Aranda smashing computers on the floor in the Minneapolis library, causing approximately $5,000 in damage, according to a 2015 complaint.

Bloomington police said later Friday that Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, was charged with attempted homicide in connection with the incident.

"Earlier today, Mall of America security was notified of an incident involving a child falling from one of the upper floors".

A witness told WCCO that the child's mother was screaming that someone had thrown her child from the balcony.

Johnson says the woman was screaming that her child was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Bloomington, Minnesota, mall.

The boy fell to the first floor alongside escalators by the Michael Kors and Clarks stores.

Potts did not say whether the child and his family are from Minnesota or visiting.
