Mali's Prime Minister and government resigned over the inability to control a deadly spike in violence.

The Prime Minister and his cabinet are out, following fierce public anger over massacres.Protesters holding a sit-in outside Sudan's military headquarters face tough conditions.

The statement said Maiga's successor would be named soon and a new government would be put in place following consultations with political parties.

President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said he had accepted Maiga's resignation and those of his ministers.

It gave no reason for the departure of Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga, but legislators had discussed on Wednesday a possible motion of no confidence in the government because of the massacre and failure to disarm militias or beat back Islamist militants.
