Huawei Reportedly Wants to Sell Its 5G Modems, but Only to Apple

Apple's iPhone 2020 may have 5G trouble, but Huawei is eager to help Huawei Reportedly Wants to Sell Its 5G Modems, but Only to Apple

The Chinese giants is said to be open to the idea of selling its Balong 5000 modems, which will be part of the foldable Mate X, exclusively to Apple.

Besides, Apple's ongoing legal battles with US-based chip-maker Qualcomm also gives Huawei the edge to sell its technologies to the iPhone-maker without having to face tough competition.

It seems as if Huawei is willing to make an exception for Apple. But the company isn't particularly known for its chip sales, either, so one has to wonder if the company could even realistically supply enough 5G modems for Apple's iPhone lineup next year. Apple has also reportedly spoken with Samsung and MediaTek about 5G chips for its 2020 iPhone series, but it doesn't look like the plan will materialize.

"Launched in January, Huawei's modem "5G Balong 5000" was introduced as the world's most powerful 5G modem and the first that fully supports both, Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) 5G network architectures". As these things usually go, there is a catch; Huawei says that it will only supply its modems to Apple, and no one else.

Trump says he'll put tariffs on $11B in European Union goods
The EU called the US$11 billion sum cited by the USTR " greatly exaggerated " and said preparations were underway to hit back. The U.S. expects the WTO will say this summer that it can take countermeasures to offset the European Union subsidies.

However, citing an an anonymous source, recent media reports claimed that Apple has "lost confidence" in Intel after the chipmaker failed to meet certain development deadlines. Huawei now uses its Balong 5000 5G modem, and it is reported that this chip will be integrated with the Mate 30 series when they officially roll out later this year.

Historically, Huawei has denied selling components to rivals, with some commentators questioning a potential strategic shift. Accused of stealing trade secrets and earlier blamed for espionage, the partnership between Apple and Huawei might not come to fruition because of the government's intervention.

At current, Intel is Apple's major supplier of modems.
