The European Commission said Google had an unfair advantage by pre-installing its Chrome browser and Google search app on Android smartphones and notebooks.

As you can see in the illustration below, users will see two new screens: one for choosing search apps and another for browser apps.

Google will start rolling out the update across Europe where all existing and new Android devices will get to check out the latest app recommendation feature amidst the Google Play app.

Google will implement new Search and Browser ballot screens in Android in the European Union in the coming weeks, the search giant said.

Google's blog post on the upcoming update includes an example of what the pop-ups will look like. Out of these six apps, security firms also found code in two more apps that allow the software to engage in another type of ad fraud.

Google said Thursday it will start giving European Union smartphone users a choice of browsers and search apps on its Android operating system, in changes created to comply with an EU antitrust ruling. Last month the European Commission gave Google feedback that bundling Chrome with the OS was also frowned upon. The changes are created to comply with a 2018 European Commission ruling that found Google guilty of abusing its monopoly powers.

We've known for a while now that Google offered Android users in Europe a different experience than worldwide customers, and that's because the European Union really wants Google to behave a lot less like a monopoly than before.

"To better protect sensitive user data available through these permissions, we restricted access to select use cases, such as when an app has been chosen by the user to be their default text message app", Samat explained.

Android is the most widely used mobile operating system, beating even Apple's iOS. Apps that are not already installed on the device will be included based on their popularity. The company also adds that it will be evolving the implementation over time. Most Android devices come with Google Chrome and Google Search preinstalled. One screen will present five options for search apps, and one screen will present five options for browsers.
