Facebook's latest blunders affected contacts and passwords for millions of users

Facebook Says It Stored'Millions Of Unencrypted Instagram Passwords Who's using Mueller Report Day to bury bad news? If you guessed Facebook, you're right: Millions more passwords stored in plaintext

"To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook and we have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them", Pedro Canahuati, the company's vice president of engineering, security and privacy, said in a blog post.

Now, Facebook has issued another update regarding the incident from last month revealing that it has found additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a "readable" format meaning that the number of leaked Instagram passwords is more than just tens of thousands.

Simply put, the chance that your Instagram password was stored somewhere in a logfile, somewhere in Facebook's network, turns out to be 100 times greater than you might have thought three weeks ago.

A Facebook internal investigation concluded that the passwords were not "internally abused or improperly accessed".

Hopefully this will see the likes of Samsung and the likes update their flagship devices a little bit quicker in the future. Surprisingly, Google has supposedly started testing the new implementation with the latest Android Q Beta.

Facebook has revealed that millions of Instagram users' passwords were stored in plain text on the company's servers, making them potentially accessible to employees.

The process was unintentional - according to Facebook - and happened when users were prompted for their password as part of a security verification process.

On top of being stored in plain text, passwords were also searchable by thousands of Facebook employees. Anxious over the mishandling of users' personal data on Facebook, the U.S. federal regulators are now considering the possibility of holding its CEO Mark Zuckerberg accountable. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to think Facebook was hoping the media would be focusing its attention elsewhere so this disclosure would go unnoticed. But still, those users, and perhaps anyone else, might want to change their password or enable two-factor authentication just to make sure.

"We've fixed the underlying issue and are notifying people whose contacts were imported", Facebook said, adding that the contacts weren't shared with anyone and are being deleted.
