Detained again, Nissan ex-chief Ghosn says arrest is 'outrageous'
06 April, 2019, 05:48
Tokyoprosecutors confiscated the passport and mobile phone of Carlos Ghosn's wife, Carole, when they arrested the former Nissan boss on Thursday morning, his lawyer said, adding that the defence team would "strongly appeal" the latest arrest.
The ousted chairman was approved by a Tokyo court on March 5 to be released on bail after being detained for more than 100 days.
Japanese TV footage showed officials entering Ghosn's apartment in Tokyo, and a vehicle later going to the prosecutors' office.
But he told the broadcasters TF1 and LCI: "I have doubts about how this trial is going to play out - these doubts aren't mine, they're those of my lawyers".
This was the fourth time Ghosn has been arrested over alleged financial misconduct.
Ghosn released a statement Thursday denouncing his arrest as an attempt by people at Nissan to silence him. Why arrest me except to try to break me? "It's hard, I have to admit it, and I call on the French government to defend me, and to defend my rights as a citizen", Ghosn said.
Ghosn has said he sent Nissan funds to the Oman dealership as an incentive and, therefore, there was nothing wrong with the move, sources said. The money may have been spent to purchase a luxury yacht for the use of Ghosn's family and other items, according to the sources.
Ghosn has been accused of three charges including falsifying financial reports in understating his income, breach of trust and transferring personal losses to Nissan's books.
Ghosn's arrest came the day after he joined Twitter and posted that he would "tell the truth" about what happened in a press conference on Thursday 11 April.

Ghosn would not have the chance for press conferences now being arrested and put into custody once again.
"Nissan'sinternal investigation has uncovered substantial evidence of blatantly unethical conduct", said company spokesman Nicholas Maxfield.
Ghosn faces two separate charges of deferring his salary to the tune of ￥9 billion (US$81 million) and not revealing this in official documents to shareholders.
Ghosn, who was arrested November 19 and jailed for more than 100 days, has vigorously denied accusations of transferring personal trading losses to the automaker and under-reporting his income.
He has since been re-arrested on multiple occasions, employed a little-used article of Japanese law to force a day in court and emerged on bail dressed in a workman's uniform and cap in a freaky attempt to avoid the media.
His tweet, which his representatives confirmed was authentic, sparked questions about his bail conditions, which were thought to include a ban on internet use.
"It's extremely unfair", Mr Hironaka told local media.
Hironaka intimated that his client may not receive a fair trial if Nissan's position is that of prosecutor in the same court and in front of the same judge as its former chief.
Reports emerged this week that Japanese prosecutors were investigating transfers by Ghosn of over $30 million of Nissan funds from 2012. He led the Nissan-Renault alliance and was credited with turning around the fortunes of both companies over several years. "In most cases, re-arrest would occur immediately following bail", said Nobuo Gohara, a lawyer who heads Gohara Compliance and Law Office, which is not involved in the Ghosn case.
