In the US, Australia and New Zealand, suspicion about Huawei's links to China's government has lead to the firm being blocked from taking part in tendering and building telecommunications networks.

The newspaper reported that on Tuesday, May will allow Huawei "limited access to help build parts of the network such as antennas and other "noncore" infrastructure".

According to The Wall Street Journal, United States Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell told the German government in a letter that allowing Chinese vendor equipment across 5G networks would reduce U.S. cooperation with intelligence agencies in Germany. Huawei also welcomed London's move.

This comes amid the leakage of last-ditch CIA warnings which were addressed to the British government and which claimed that Huawei had been funded by branches of China's military and intelligence.

However, some British lawmakers remained opposed.

Tom Tugendhat, the chairman of Britain's Foreign Affairs Committee, for his part, underscored that blocking Huawei from all core parts of the UK's 5G network does not alleviate security fears. "The definition of core and non-core is a very hard one with 5G".

"As part of our plans to provide world class digital connectivity, including 5G, we have conducted a review of the supply chain to ensure a diverse and secure supply base, now and into the future", the spokeswoman said.

In what some have compared to the Cold War arms race, the United States is anxious 5G dominance would give any global competitor such as China an advantage Washington is not ready to accept.

5G, which will offer much faster data speeds and become the foundation stone of many industries and networks, is seen as one of the biggest innovations since the birth of the internet itself a generation ago.

"Whatever decisions are ultimately reached on Huawei and announced, this whole agenda on working on improvements in standards and regulation to strengthen the security in these vital systems, I know this entire panel is passionate about". Too, the United Kingdom decision will likely be used as a template by other countries in the European Union and elsewhere when it comes to working with Huawei.

Huawei's equipment is either not present or is being stripped out of existing core networks in Britain, but is widely used in lower risk parts such as radio masts.

Operators such as Vodafone have warned a complete ban would significantly extend the cost and time to deploy 5G. Earlier the media reported a decision on Huawei would be made in the spring, and the company's market share would capped at 50%.

"While we await a formal government announcement, we are pleased that the United Kingdom is continuing to take an evidence-based approach to its work and we will continue work cooperatively with the government and the industry".

Amid concerns about the company's security, and its possible links to the Chinese government, Huawei has been banned from providing essential parts of the UK's 5G network.
