Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for general elections on May 18, local media reported Thursday.

The measure will reportedly take effect the day after the Australian authorities call the election and will apply to ads containing references to politicians, parties, and electoral procedures, as well as various political slogans and logos. It is a choice that will determine the economy that Australians live in, not just for the next 3 years, but the next decade.

"So the choice to be made by Australians on May 18 is like it always is at every election, and that is, who do you trust to deliver that strong economy which your essential services rely on", Morrison said. And that's why there is so much at stake at this election.

Morrison, who came to office following a bruising intra-party putsch in August 2018, faces a fierce challenge from the opposition Labor Party, led by former union leader Bill Shorten.

China is an important market for Australian exports so its economy is a major driver of the Aussie Dollar and news Thursday of a pickup in Chinese factory-gate inflation in March suggests that China's economy could be reviving, helped by infrastructure spending and tax cuts.

Manager Maurizio Sarri backed the club's strong stance after his team's 1-0 quarter-final, first-leg win in Prague . The Blues avoided punishment, however, after UEFA ended disciplinary proceedings over the incident in February.

Experienced Labor strategist Bruce Hawker said Labor had to be most wary of the coalition's attack on its negative gearing and franking credits policies.

Still, Shorten deserves credit for keeping his party disciplined, and actually producing some courageous policies on climate change and negative gearing in the past year, while the Coalition government, ravaged by internal power tussles, has squandered its terms.

The prime minister on Wednesday night released a video featuring his family and asking voters to think long-term. "We can manage the economy in the interests of working- and middle-class people".

"We are ready for the election, we are ready for government", Shorten said.

The governing coalition has dumped two prime ministers - Tony Abbott, 61, and Malcolm Turnbull, 64 - in recent years amid bitter infighting.
