Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic condemned the terror attack and expressed their solidarity with Sri Lanka.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks in a country, which was at war for decades with Tamil separatists until 2009 during which bomb blasts in the capital were common.

"Please follow the instructions of local security officials and follow travel advice for updates", the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK said while issuing a notice for people travelling to and from Sri Lanka. The other three blasts where reported at the Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury five-star hotels in Colombo.

NPR's Lauren Frayer reports that the violence comes just before the 10-year anniversary of the end of Sri Lanka's civil war.
