The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday grounded all Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 jets in the USA, leaving passengers aboard 21 South Florida flights scrambling for alternatives.

In the meantime, all passengers are urged to check the status of their flight online before heading to the airport.

Mayor Mark Bogen said on Wednesday that he had planned to introduce his proposal to the county commission for a vote. A union representing flight attendants at American Airlines and a handful of senators pushed for a similar move in the USA, and anxious passengers flooded airlines with questions on social media.

Air Canada has 24 of the jets in its fleet, which the airline said carry between 9,000 and 12,000 customers per day.

Many countries, including the United Kingdom, have suspended the plane after Sunday's crash. Sunwing Airlines operates four of the jets and grounded them yesterday for commercial reasons. In certain circumstances, the planes' systems try to tilt their noses down, contrary to the efforts of pilots - a pattern that was seen in both flights before they crashed, he said.

The US is the latest country to suspend the Boeing 737 Max from flying after nations include the United Kingdom, the European Union, China, India, New Zealand and Australia all grounded the aircraft. Air Canada and WestJet Airlines Ltd. saw their stocks decline about 3.4 per cent and 2.5 per cent, respectively, since the Ethiopian Airlines disaster that killed all 157 people on board.

United Airlines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines Co all fly versions of the 737 MAX.

Amid the confusion, airlines scrambled to field calls and rebook passengers.

Air Canada and WestJet Airlines Ltd. confirmed Wednesday they were in the process of grounding their Max 8s.

"I think everyone feels a little nervous before flying or maybe has a routine".

Customers are advised to check the status of their flight on aircanada.com before going to the airport.

Angela Mah, a spokeswoman for Air Canada, said the problem was not related to the latest crash, and was instead a "hydraulic indication".

Jay Shabat, a senior analyst at Skift Airline Weekly, said in an interview he expects business to return to normal at all three airlines relatively soon.

He said that "the evidence we found on the ground made it even more likely the flight path was very close to Lion Air's".

Association of Flight Attendants-CWA president Sara Nelson said: "Lives must come first always".

Other routes, notably Halifax-London and St. John's-London are cancelled in the short term, she said, with passengers re-routed through Montreal and Toronto.

Boeing said it supported the action to temporarily ground 737 max operations after it consulted with the FAA, NTSB and its customers.

The decision, Minister Marc Garneau said, was based on new satellite tracking data reviewed by Canadian aviation authorities. European regulators on Tuesday grounded the aircraft following Sunday's crash of a similar plane in Ethiopia, which killed 157 people and was the second crash involving that type of plane since October.

Meanwhile, the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority made the announcement it would join the ongoing investigation into the crash and ground Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 9s via the Emirates' state-run WAM news agency.
