According to The Australian, "New Zealand's High Commissioner to Australia, Annette King, also rejected Senator Anning's remarks and declared it was up to Australian voters as to whether he remained in federal parliament after the May election".

Sydney doctor Kate Ahmad and Melbourne author Harris Sultan began separate petitions on Change.org - almost an hour apart - calling for the removal of Anning from Parliament.

Senator Anning sparked widespread outrage after blaming New Zealand's immigration policy for Christchurch mosque terror attack on Friday that killed 50 people.

Although Senator Fraser Anning called the New Zealand mosque shootings an "unfortunate tragedy", he appeared to double down on his earlier statements.

It is pertinent to mention here that Senator Fraser Anning was facing people's anger and strict reaction over the anti-Muslim statement in Australia. "We request that he be expelled from his position as senator, and investigated by law enforcement agencies for supporting right wing terrorism", said Sydney doctor Kate Ahmad, one of the women who started the petition.

Police were investigating the incident.

The government and Labor on Sunday jointly published a Senate motion calling on "all Australians to stand against hate and to publicly, and always, condemn actions and comments created to incite fear and distrust".

Anning continued to stand his ground on Sunday, telling a specially arranged press conference that while media had "twisted" his initial statement, he did not feel the need to apologize for what many decried as an ill-timed diatribe.

Change.org executive director Sally Rugg tweeted that the petition was the most popular petition in the site's history.

William Connolly, the 17-year-old now known by the name "Egg Boy", has gained fame after he cracked an egg on the head of Senator Anning during a press conference on Saturday.

Pressure on Mr Anning is also mounting from within parliament, as the government and Labor will move a censure motion against Senator Anning when parliament resumes on April 1 condemning his "inflammatory and divisive comments seeking to attribute blame to victims of a horrific crime and to vilify people on the basis of religion".

Former PM Kevin Rudd dubbed Anning a "racist and a fascist", and encouraged Australians to sign a petition calling for him to be booted out of parliament. There is no place in the Australian government for Neo-Nazis.

"There has been too much tolerance of what passes for hate speech in this country".

"You don't get your message out by coming up and crunching an egg on someone - it's just stupid".

"Police arrested a 17-year-old male from Hampton after he allegedly threw an egg at a 69-year-old Brisbane man at an address in Moorabbin this afternoon during a planned meeting", Victoria Police said.

Connolly has publicly addressed the incident for the first time - and warned people not to partake in egging politicians.
