Those on the right saw this as an attack on Carlson because of his status as a host on Fox News and one of the leading voices on the right. Among those insults were instances where he called women "extremely primitive".

After Media Matters published the radio audio and accompanying transcripts, which retained the context of each comment, the left pounced on Carlson, calling for a boycott of his Fox News show or for Fox News to fire Carlson altogether.

Then, in an October 2009 show, Bubba the Love Sponge launched into what appeared to be a hypothetical description of the young girls at the boarding school attended by Carlson's daughter experimenting with each other sexually.

In a series of segments on Bubba the Love Sponge Show between 2006 and 2011, Carlson discussed issues such as underage women, statutory rape, and polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, who was sentenced in 2011 to life in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl.

Carlson, the now-host of "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Fox News in Bill O'Reilly's old prime time slot, also made misogynistic comments about how to attract women.

"Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I'm on television every weeknight live for an hour", Carlson said.

"I am not defending underage marriage at all - I just don't think it's the same thing exactly as pulling a child from a bus stop and sexually assaulting that child..."

He responded to widespread backlash Sunday night by telling people to watch his show if they want to know what he thinks. He adds that "anyone who disagrees with my views is welcome to come on and explain why".

He also says that Bill Clinton should divorce his wife Hillary and "take up plural marriage or something with a bunch of teenagers in a foreign country".

Laura Keiter, a communications director for Media Matters, said in a statement to TheWrap: "Anyone remotely familiar with Tucker Carlson won't be surprised by the misogyny".

As we posted earlier, some of Carlson's comments proved shocking. "If you're talking to a feminist, and she's giving you, 'Well, men really need to be more sensitive, ' (say) 'no, actually, men don't need to be more sensitive, you just need to be quiet and kind of do what you're told'".

On Sunday, Fox News rebuked remarks made by host Jeanine Pirro suggesting that Republican Ilhan Omar supported Sharia Law because she wore a hijab.
