Mr Trump made the comments during a press conference with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in the Oval Office yesterday.

While the Pences hosted Varadkar last year as part of an annual trip the Irish delegation makes to Washington, this year the vice president and his wife, Karen Pence, also invited Varadkar's partner, Matthew Barrett.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he was "surprised at how badly" the Brexit negotiations have gone.

"The president, who described Brexit as a" attractive, lovely thing" during a visit to Scotland in June 2016, said the UK's divorce from the European Union is "tearing apart" Britain and other member states which he believes is "a shame".

In an unhelpful intervention for the United Kingdom prime minister, the president said Theresa May had ignored his advice on how to better handle negotiations.

British parliament on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal, throwing the country's Brexit process into further chaos.

Mr Trump said: "I am coming at some point during the year".

"I'm surprised at how badly it's all gone from the standpoint of a negotiation", he said. But "she didn't listen to that and that's fine". I think it could have been negotiated in a different manner, frankly.

"I hate to see everything being ripped apart right now", Trump said, according to Politico.

To me, I think it's racial, and I think it's inappropriate in the sense that there's no protection for the players. Mitchell noted the incident was "not the first time something like that has happened in [their] arena".

"I can tell you it's a very complex thing that's going on right now", Trump said of Britain's drawn-out and drama-filled divorce from the European Union.

"They'd say, what do you mean you're going to take another vote?" It's a tough situation.

'There was no reason for that to happen.

With MPs considering seeking to extend Article 50, the USA president said Brexit was likely to be delayed.

"If they don't talk to us we're going to do something that's very severe economically", Trump said.

Trump has previously been critical of May's Brexit deal, warning that it could "kill" a bilateral trade agreement between the United States and the UK. Would you like to express your feelings on Brexit?

When pressed on what advice he gave to May, Trump answered: "Well, I just told her what I would do and how I would do it".

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, US vice president Mike Pence and other high-profile political figures were also in attendance.

The Taoiseach said: "It's not particularly support that I've asked for from the president on Brexit".
