He saw a man dressed in black military-style gear and a helmet holding a large gun.

But it was compulsory not to move during prayer and they carried on.

Alabi told everyone inside to "get down", but it wasn't until the gunman shot someone through a side window that everyone dropped to the floor.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the "terrorist attack" in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" on "one of New Zealand's darkest days".

Speaking of the terror attack, Alabi said that he heard a voice outside the mosque and made a decision to stop the prayer and peek outside the window.

He revealed in a chat with The New Zealand Herald, that: "When I saw those Muslims shot dead, I just told our brothers, 'Go down!" A man inside the mosque followed the shooter as he left the mosque. They showed all their love.

Shortly before that, gunman began the livestream, in which he was seen parking outside the mosque.

Aziz charged at Tarrant with a credit card machine when someone shouted that a gunman had opened fire.

"When I came back in the mosque, I could see that everybody was very frightened and trying to (take) cover", Mr Aziz said. One person died later in hospital.

But the death toll could have been much higher if not for the heroic actions of Aziz, an Australian citizen, whose efforts to distract and chase the gunman away have attracted widespread praise.

Alabi said he heard a voice outside the mosque at about 1:55 pm local time and stopped the prayer he was leading to peak outside the window.

Abdul Aziz was praying at Linwood mosque in the quiet New Zealand city on Friday with his four sons when he heard gunshots outside.

He went back to his auto to reload, then returned to the mosque to kill more people.

According to latest reports, of the 50 people who lost their lives about 42 people died at the Al Noor Mosque and seven at Linwood Mosque, where Mr Aziz and his four children went for their Friday worship.

He said he could hear his two youngest sons, aged 11 and 5, urging him to come back inside.

The gunman returned, firing. Mr Aziz said he ran, weaving through cars parked in the driveway, which prevented the gunman from getting a clean shot.

Abdul Aziz smashed window of the terrorist's vehicle with strikes of the gun, which the culprit had dropped to pull out more weapons from his auto. As the attacker moves once again to his vehicle, and probably a different weapon of want, get, grab, Aziz a rifle, which Tarrant had left on the floor.

Tarrant ran back to his auto and got another gun and Aziz said he threw the credit card machine at him as he ducked between cars.

"The windshield shattered; that's why he got scared". "He went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved", Alabi said, speaking of Aziz.
