Somalia's authorities secure the site of an attack after five people were killed including a deputy minister when al-Shabaab militants stormed government buildings in the capital, Mogadishu.

At least five gunmen stormed the building after a suicide auto bombing at the gates.

Saqar Ibrahim Abdalla, Somalia's deputy minister of labor and social affairs, was killed in his ground-floor office shortly after gunmen stormed the building, he said. "We shall give details later", Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab's military operation spokesman said.

A auto bomb blast rocked the Shangani district of Mogadishu targeting a building housing the ministries of Labour and of General Works, Reconstruction and Housing as well as the Headquarters of Mogadishu regional police.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A large explosion shook the centre of the Somali capital in the latest bombing by the group, which is fighting to establish its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law, as the attackers stormed into the building.

The death toll is expected to rise as dozens of people were believed to be inside the building at the time of the attack since Saturday is a working day in Somalia. There has been no word on casualties.

Police say five gunmen are involved in the attack and that security forces are fighting to neutralize them.

The group also claimed responsibility for a March 7 vehicle bombing near a restaurant in the capital that killed four people.
