SpaceX's live stream starts from 12am on March 1 and cycles through preparation stages and launch before the capsule goes into orbit.

Elon Musk's SpaceX was due to launch an unmanned crew capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket early on Saturday, bound for the International Space Station, a major step toward National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) goal of reviving the USA human spaceflight programme this year.

A Falcon rocket blasted off with the crew Dragon capsule early Saturday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The capsule successfully separated from the rocket about eleven minutes later, sparking cheers in the control room.

Every successful stage of the mission - whose planning suffered three-year delays - triggered cheers at the firm's headquarters and at the Kennedy Space Center.

It is to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean, and then return to Cape Canaveral.

Despite SpaceX's success at recovering and reusing its rockets, NASA is insisting on brand new boosters from SpaceX for the crew capsule flights.

As part of its Commercial Crew program, NASA handed contracts to both SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to develop rockets that could send astronauts back to space.

SpaceX's Crew Dragon began its inaugural test flight early Saturday morning.

The excitement was palpable at Cape Canaveral, from the space-fan volunteers guiding media on site, to the tourists who came to watch.

"It's been a long eight years", said Bob Cabana, the Kennedy Space Center's director and a former astronaut.

Falcon 9 with Crew Dragon rumbles off the pad. NASA is providing eight billion US dollars for SpaceX and Boeing to build and operate these new systems.

"When you're here, right, there's a pride in the country".

"They are fathers. I think it is really important for all employees, all engineers and technicians at SpaceX to understand the precious-I don't even want to call it a gift-the responsibility we've been given", said Shotwell. "There's a pride in what the United States and its teams can accomplish".

The US may have moved one step closer to weaning itself off its reliance on Russian Federation to get astronauts into space as SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule has embarked on its first test mission to the International Space Station.

Why it matters: For almost a decade, NASA has been reliant on Russian rockets to put their astronauts into orbit.

"We instrumented the crap out of that vehicle", said Kathy Lueders, the manager of NASA's Commercial Crew program.

"I fully expect we're going to learn something on this flight", said Bill Gerstenmaier, Nasa's head of human spaceflight.

For SpaceX, sending an astronaut into orbit would be a culmination of years of hard work and high-risk investment. That's the main reason he founded SpaceX in 2002, the billionaire entrepreneur has said repeatedly over the years - to help humanity become a multiplanet species.

Reuters reported on February 21 that SpaceX and Boeing both must address significant design and safety concerns before they can fly humans.
