The new regulation comes two weeks after a federal judge in NY ruled not to lift a ban which would have allowed 40 unvaccinated children to return to school, where they have been barred for months amid a county-wide measles outbreak.

The county is now experiencing its longest outbreak since 2000, with most of the cases involving members of the Orthodox Jewish community.

"Every action we have taken since the beginning of this outbreak has been created to maximize vaccinations and minimize exposures".

The measles outbreak has spread to 15 states throughout the country, and the number of cases through the first three months of 2019 is approaching the total number of cases for all of a year ago.

News 12 asked the county executive how he would enforce that, but he said he does not anticipate that he'll have to.

The order comes into effect at midnight today and will last for 30 days. Rates as low as 60 percent were found in parts of NY where measles spread, State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said in February.

Last year, 82 people brought the virus into the USA from other countries, representing the largest import of measles cases since 2000.

Humbach said police won't be stopping people and asking for vaccination records. "This is the longest outbreak in the US due to measles since the disease was officially eradicated in 2000". It poses the greatest risks to young children, pregnant women, and those who are immunocompromised, and it typically presents itself as a fever or rash on the face that then spreads to the rest of the body.

County Executive Ed Day said in a news conference on Tuesday that many Orthodox rabbis have been working with health officials to encourage vaccination in their community.

An outbreak in New York City also has mostly affected haredi Orthodox communities, where vaccination rates tend to be lower and anti-vaccination literature has spread, the Times reported citing public health officials. It violated their religious freedom, they argued, as they had used religious exemptions to opt their children out of the standard vaccination programme.

"This type of response is unacceptable and irresponsible".

The law would be enforced as any other emergency declaration and those found in violation might end up in jail for to six months or with a $500 fine, Day said, noting that the law was aimed at encouraging people, not punishing. "It endangers the health and well-being of others, and displays a shocking lack of responsibility and concern for others in our community".
