Nvidia beats Microsoft, Intel for chip maker Mellanox in $7B deal

Nvidia offers bid for Israeli chip firm Mellanox: report NVIDIA buys high-performance chip-maker Mellanox for $6.9 billion

As well as gaining significant resources from Mellanox, Nvidia's deal keeps these same resources out of the hands of direct competitors like Intel.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said Nvidia has been pushing more into networking and connectivity with its own tailored solutions and Mellanox would bring further expertise.

Nvidia bought Mellanox to help stitch those servers together into one giant computer, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang told Reuters in an interview.

Mellanox's chips are said to increase the speed at which data is transferred from components both within and between computers-an important factor for today's businesses, where speed can make a big difference to enterprise networks and cloud services.

"This exciting transaction would unite two HPC industry leaders and strengthen the combined company's ability to create data-centric system architectures for the convergence of the HPC and hyperscale markets around AI and other HPDA tasks", said Steve Conway, COO and Research SVP at Hyperion Research.

In its press announcement, Nvidia said it will acquire all Mellanox stock for $125 per share.

Mellanox, originally founded in Israel, has a long history of collaboration and joint innovation with Nvidia.

Intel declined to comment on whether the company had bid for Mellanox, while Xilinx did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nvidia has been looking at boosting its data centre revenue for some time. We should expect this deal to cement in this week, leading directly into NVIDIA's biggest event of the year: the GPU Technology Conference, or GTC.

Nvidia gets about a quarter of its revenue from data centres, with the $2.9 billion in sales in 2018 from the segment growing 52 percent year over year. It could, however, face some regulatory hurdles in China, where Mellanox has major customers such as Alibaba and Baidu.

Analysts believe Intel would have faced even greater challenges as it and Mellanox were dominant suppliers of InfiniBand technology, a networking standard commonly used in supercomputers.
