Images released by NASA taken by two instruments on board the Terra satellite show the remnant smoke trail of the meteor through the clouds over the body of water between Alaska and Russian Federation on December 18, 2018.

A massive meteorite explosion happened over the Bering Sea. The orange-tinted cloud that the fireball left behind by super-heating the air it passed through can be seen below and to the right of the GIF's centre. The report said a smoke cloud was spotted at 2350 GMT, which was the same time that NASA's monitoring sensors picked up on the meteor.

NASA published satellite photos of a mysterious and powerful meteor which appeared in the sky in December and released 10 times more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, but somehow wasn't seen by anybody at the time.

A meteor hurtling toward Earth at over 71,000 miles per hour exploded above the Bering Sea in a spectacle that lit up the sky. "Overall it all has to be coordinated, so one activity doesn't negatively impact another instrument", Eric Moyer, deputy project manager at the Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a previous news release.

Meteors are rocks from outer space that become incandescent upon entering earth's atmosphere as a result of friction.

The space agency watches for near-Earth objects in the range of 460 feet (140 m) across and larger.

This fireball was the most powerful meteor to be observed after 2013; But thanks to the altitude at which the explosion occurred and also that the area of explosion was remote - the meteor posed no threat to anyone on the ground.

The still image, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MODIS) instrument, is a true-color image showing the remnants of the meteor's passage, seen as a dark shadow cast on thick, white clouds.
