12 March, 2019, 23:56
A type of Takata air bag inflator once thought to be safe has now come under scrutiny after a crash and explosion in the U.S. state of Maryland injured the driver of a Honda minivan. But the chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, blowing apart a metal canister and hurling shrapnel.
This set of recalls is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in US history, which includes as many as 70 million vehicles recalled.
The inflators covered by this recall were used as replacement parts in recalls that began in 2014.
Honda is recalling around 1.2 million older vehicles in the U.S., Canada and Central America because the Takata driver's air bag inflators that were installed during previous recalls could still be unsafe - exploding and sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The vehicle was included in one of Honda's earliest campaigns to replace Takata air bag inflators that contained a propellant that can become unstable and explode in a crash, a defect linked to more than a dozen deaths and at least 220 injuries worldwide.
Affected vehicles include model year 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics; 2002 to 2004 Odyssey minivans; 2002 to 2006 CR-Vs; 2003 to 2008 Honda Pilot SUVs; 2003 to 2010 Honda Element SUVs; 2006 Honda Ridgelines; and 2007 to 2011 Accords.

An investigation later showed that manufacturing issues at Takata's Mexico facility introduced excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly, leading to the problem.
Some Acura vehicles made between 2002 and 2006 are also covered under the recall, including MDX, EL, TL and CL.
Honda is offering free loaner cars while vehicles are being repaired. In addition, owners can get a free rental auto for the day of the recall fix, or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable, Honda says.
