More than 1,600 hotel guests secretly filmed in South Korea

More than 800 couples were shown on the site over three months, mostly having sex, police said.

Police have arrested two men, with another two are under investigation for their part in the incident, which reportedly involved over 40 rooms across 30 hotels in 10 different cities around South Korea, CNN reports.

Authorities discovered the hidden cameras inside TV boxes, wall outlets and hair dryer stands in 42 hotel rooms, the National Police Agency said in a statement obtained by CNN.

Nearly 1,600 guests were secretly filmed in their hotel rooms across the nation, with the footage live-streamed online for paying customers to watch.

Police are also investigating another K-pop star, Seungri, who soared to worldwide stardom as a member of the group Big Bang, over suspicions that he attempted to arrange unlawful sexual services for his business investors.

There were already more than 4,000 members on the site and 97 of them paid a $44.95 (RM182) monthly fee to get "extra features" which includes the option to replay live streams.

The South Korean authorities have warned guests to be careful while using hotel rooms and assured that they would "go to the very end for such a serious and grave crime that invades sensitive privacy of individuals".

Spy cams are reportedly a big problem in South Korea, where more than 6,400 cases of illegal filming were reported to authorities in 2017, nearly three times the amount reported five years earlier.

Last year, tens of thousands of women took to the streets of Seoul, the capital, to protest against the practice and other sexual violence, and demanded stricter punishment.

Notably, this is not the first case of hidden cameras found in hotels or Airbnbs - although the scale of this effort and the paid customer element really drives up the ick factor. Under local law, they face up to five years in jail and substantial fines.
