One thing I learned from my eight years of writing about Major League Baseball is that people generally don't care about 29 of the 30 teams.

Major League Baseball unveiled a sweeping range of rule changes due to be introduced over the next two years on Thursday, with several moves created to speed up play and boost entertainment.

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA have agreed on numerous changes that will take effect this season or next, many of which were outlined by ESPN's Jeff Passan.

This is another attempt to prevent the slowing of games with pitching changes during half innings. But over the long-term, the league and union are likely to work together to eliminate the built-in incentives that cause teams to do what the Tigers are doing now: Rebuilding.

The new rules could also see a reduction in position players taking the mound as everyone will be designated as either a position player or a pitcher, with an exception made for anyone that throws 20-plus innings and starts 20 or more games at any position including DH.

In the case of mound visits, which were capped for the first time past year at six, this will continue to force decisions about the wisdom of early-game trips to the mound.

The MLB Players Association and the MLB announced an All-Star Game Election Day and a $1 million bonus for the Home Run Derby victor, both of which will start this season. A team can carry a maximum of 13 pitchers on its 26-man roster.

Among the changes agreed to is roster sizes will expand from 25 to 26 players starting in the 2020 season.

Inning breaks: Inning breaks will be reduced from 2 minutes, 5 seconds to 2 minutes for local games and from 2:25 to 2 minutes in national games, "subject to discussions with broadcast partners".

- The trade deadline is now July 31 - period.

The first change to roster construction will enter into effect this season with a single trade deadline on July 31.

What will be in place this summer are a single July 31 trade deadline, an All-Star election day and a Home Run Derby with the game's biggest stars (both sides hope) vying for a $1 million bonus.

Though the current Major League Baseball collective bargaining agreement doesn't expire until 2021, the two sides have also agreed to start having conversations as soon as possible in efforts to avoid any sort of future strike, and will touch on some of the games most "fundamental" economic issues. The rule was implemented unilaterally by the Office of the Commissioner. The fans then can vote on position players.

- Pitchers will have to serve a 15- rather than 10-day Injured List period as a way to try to further thwart roster manipulation.

Home Run Derby: Total player prize money for the Home Run Derby will be increased to $2.5 million. Additionally, the prize money awarded to players on the winning All-Star team will be increased beginning with the 2019 All-Star Game.
