An Israeli rabbi died on Monday of wounds from a Palestinian attack a day earlier in the occupied West Bank in which a soldier was killed - an incident that played into Israeli politics three weeks before a national election.

Hamas is desperate to divert attention to the economic protests that have rocked Gaza in recent days, which have seen Palestinians direct their growing frustration against their own Islamist regime.

Netanyahu, who leads the most rightwing government in Israeli history, relies on support from settlers in the West Bank.

Later on Sunday, the Israeli military confirmed that the soldier stabbed at Ariel Junction had died, naming him as Staff Sgt Gal Keidan, 19, from the southern Israeli town of Beersheba.

Rabbi Ettinger was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition after being shot in the head.

"That same assailant fired with that weapon toward three vehicles", he said, with the third auto targeted stopping. He then carjacked another vehicle and sped away, firing toward more soldiers before escaping into a nearby Palestinian village. "A manhunt is ongoing", Conricus said.

The army also did not say whether the suspected Palestinian assailant was affiliated with a militant group or had acted alone.

Immediately following the attack, the IDF imposed a military closure on the Palestinian town of Burqin, where the assailant ditched a vehicle he had stolen as he fled.

The attacker stole the soldier's gun and fired at passing cars.

Israeli forces arrested at least seven Palestinians from various areas of the occupied West Bank, in multiple overnight raids across the area, Palestine's news agency (WAFA) reported on Monday.

Sunday's attack came amid rising tension in Jerusalem since last month when Israeli police briefly sealed the Al-Aqsa Mosque's Rahma Gate, sparking angry Palestinian demonstrations. Israel struck back hitting 100 Hamas targets in Gaza.

In an apparent attempt to portray the Palestinian Authority (PA) as opposing terror attacks on Israelis, a pro-Hamas website called Palestine Now claimed that official PA spokesman Adnan Al-Damiri characterized as "criminal" the attack launched on Sunday in Ariel that claimed the lives of two Israelis.
