The 45-year-old Suzuki, who started in right field in both of the Mariners games this week at Tokyo Dome, has 3,089 hits over his career in Nippon Professional Baseball and the major leagues. Before the bottom half of the inning, Seattle manager Scott Servais made the switch as Ichiro jogged off the field for the last time in a Mariners uniform.

At one point Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon attempted to bow to Ichiro, but the future Hall of Famer waived him off and went in for a hug.

The Baseball Hall of Fame announced immediately after the game that Ichiro will be eligible for induction in 2025, and he'll have a resume worthy of first-ballot enshrinement (if not 100 percent of the vote) as a 10-time MLB All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove victor.

Ichiro Suzuki has officially retired from baseball effective immediately.

Ichiro Suzuki started for the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in what the Japanese news agency Kyodo is reporting will be his final major league game. The Mariners won 5-4 after three extra innings.

"I have achieved so many of my dreams in baseball, both in my career in Japan and, since 2001, in Major League Baseball", Ichiro said. Those 4,367 hits are the most ever at the top professional level.

On Wednesday, Suzuki started his 28th professional season and 19th in the majors, where he spent most of his career in Seattle and had stints with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins.

Though rumors about Suzuki's retirement swirled a year ago, the outfielder finished the 2018 season at the Mariners' front office as special assistant to the chairman and didn't rule out a return.

The 45-year-old Ichiro retires as baseball's active hits leader with 3,089.

Let's face it: Even though these games count against the regular-season record for the two teams, it's not like they mean that much more, with the M's firmly - and finally - entrenched in an admitted rebuilding season.

"Seven years ago, it appeared he had played for the last time in Japan", Fumihiro Fujisawa, head of the Japanese Association of Baseball Research, told The Associated Press. "I think that sets him apart", Small added.
