House demands that upcoming Mueller report be made public

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller the special counsel probing Russian interference in the 2016 election arrives on Capitol Hill for a closed door meeting before the Senate Judiciary Committee in this House poised to pass measure calling for DOJ to publicly release Mueller's report

The departure could be a sign that Mr. Mueller's team is wrapping up their investigation into allegations of Russian collusion with the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

The House passed the largely symbolic resolution Thursday morning as pressure mounts on the Justice Department to release Mueller's full report in a 420-0 vote.

Six committee chairs in the Democratic-controlled House sent Barr a letter on February 22, urging him to make Mueller's report public "to the maximum extent permitted by law".

Attorney General William Barr has so far refused to promise to make the contents of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe public - an issue that led most Senate Democrats to oppose his confirmation in the first place.

Under the statute governing the special counsel's work, Mueller is only required to provide Attorney General Bill Barr with a "confidential report explaining the prosecution or declination decisions".

Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and leaders of several House committees, have vowed to sue the Trump administration for Mueller's report and evidence if the Justice Department refuses to turn it over to Congress. He has promised members of Congress to send his own "report" on Mueller's investigation to lawmakers, but it's unclear what that will contain. But both McConnell and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, South Carolina Sen.

"I don't know what, at the end of the day, what will be releasable".

Democrats have also made clear they plan to use all the tools at their disposal, including subpoena power, in an effort to make the report available to the public. He defended Barr, saying he "understands the questions, the turmoil this has caused". "Full transparency is the only way to prevent future speculation".

The Senate has been less eager to push Barr on the release of the report, despite some in the GOP caucus who have said they want to ensure transparency.

"I want the American people to know as much as they can and see as much as they can", said Hurd, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer. But he stopped short of giving a full-throated guarantee that the report would be made public. Lindsey Graham of SC interjected and asked that the resolution be modified to call for Attorney General William Barr to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Department of Justice's handling of the Clinton email investigation and other matters. Mr. Barr can release the report publicly if he decides it is in the public interest.
