The alleged killer is believed to have live-streamed the shooting on Facebook.

A gunman entered a mosque and began shooting with an automatic weapon in New Zealand's city of Christchurch on Friday.

The New Zealand Herald reports that the incident took place at a mosque, and that there were numerous casualties.

Another witness said they saw at least four people lying on the ground. Bush also recommended that residents across the city remain off the streets and indoors.

Police commissioner Mike Bush said all schools in the city had been placed in lockdown in response to "a serious ongoing firearms incident". "Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers", Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal said. Muslims account for just over 1 percent of New Zealand's population, a 2013 census showed.

About 300 people were inside the mosque "and he started shooting all the people".

"Police are now responding to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at around 1.40pm", police said in a statement. One suspect in the slayings is reported by police to be in custody, but law enforcement has said they are still looking for other assailants and are treated it as an active shooter situation.

The Herald is carrying a report that terrified mosque-goers who escaped the shooting told a neighbour that the gunman wearing military uniform had a lot of magazines strapped to his legs.

New Zealand has restrictive gun laws, of the sort proposed by gun control advocates in the United States.

Some of the Bangladesh cricket team were near the mosque when the shooting happened and were filmed by an ESPN journalist running away from the building.

Gunshots were heard near the Al Noor mosque around 1:40 p.m. local time. "It's unbelievable nutty. I don't understand how anyone could do this to these people, to anyone".

"Police urge anyone in central Christchurch to stay off the streets and report any suspicious behaviour", he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Former FBC journalist Roland Koroi, says they have been instructed by police to stay indoors.

The man who claimed responsibility for the shooting said he was 28-year-old white Australian who came to New Zealand only to plan and train for the attack.
