"This is the saddest day of my life", de Campos said, speaking to reporters outside the school in the Sao Paulo suburb of Suzano. "It didn't take long until police arrived".

Sao Paulo governor Joao Doria said on Twitter the "children were cruelly murdered". When I realised they were gunshots, I stayed there.

The men, identified as former students at the school in a suburb of Sao Paulo, also shot and killed the owner of a used vehicle business nearby before launching the attack on the school, authorities said.

Among the dead were five school children, one adult who worked at the building, one person who was standing just outside the school and the two adolescent shooters, police said.

"I was shocked with the scenes I saw inside that school".

The school has about 1000 primary and secondary students aged between six and 18, and a language centre.

The motive for the shooting is not clear, police said.

Nine dead, including five children, in Brazil shooting; 17 others also shot
Latin America's most populous nation has the largest number of annual homicides in the world, but school shootings are rare. At least eight people were killed in a school shooting in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, local media report, citing police.

It's not the first mass school shooting in Brazil's history.

Earlier in the day, a man was injured in another shooting near the school, but police are investigating to see whether both cases are connected.

Ambulances transport bodies from a Brazil school, the site of a fatal shooting on Wednesday, March 13.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world with 64,000 murders in 2017, a rate of nearly 31 per 100,000 inhabitants - that's three times higher than the level the United Nations classifies as endemic violence.

Gun crime is extremely common in Brazil but school shootings are rare.

The last major school shooting in the country was in 2011, when 12 children were shot dead by a former pupil in Rio de Janeiro. The law mandated background checks and gave federal police the right to reject applications for gun ownership for any reason.

President Jair Bolsonaro ran on a platform that included promises to crack down on criminals, in part by expanding public access to guns.
