Drinking very hot tea almost doubles risk of cancer, study says

Cancer risk: Splash of milk in your tea could cut chance of throat cancer Your nice hot cuppa could be a killer…

50,045 individuals aged 40 to 75 years were followed by scientists for a median of 10 years, and during follow-up, 317 new cases of esophageal cancer were identified.

Drinking 700ml of tea per day at a temperature greater than or equal to 60°C was associated with a 90 per cent higher risk of oesophageal cancer. But this study, say the authors, is the first to pinpoint a specific temperature of tea.

The researchers said that it would be "reasonable" to extrapolate their results to other types of hot drink.

The American Cancer Society report found drinking two cups of tea at more than 140 degrees nearly doubles your chance of esophageal cancer.

Drinking too hot a cup of tea, could potentially increase one's risk of ofesophageal cancer.

Georgina Hill, health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said this study adds to existing evidence that having drinks hotter than 60 degrees may increase the risk of oesophageal cancer - but she said most people in the UK don't drink their tea at such high temperatures.

Previous research has found a link between hot tea drinking and esophageal cancer. It is usually caused by repeated injury to the esophagus due to smoke, alcohol, acid reflux and - maybe - hot liquids. Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine who was not involved with the research, believes the findings in the study have less to do with tea - or any other beverage or food for that matter - but with the heat.

It adds however that exact cause of oesophageal cancer is unknown.

"Tea with or without milk should cool down before drinking to reduce the risk of esophageal cancer", he stressed.

"If you go to the Middle East or to Russian Federation, they drink it out of a samovar that's constantly under heat", Peter Goggi, president of the Tea Association of the US, told CNN in 2018.

'By focusing on the more general risk factors of smoking, obesity and alcohol, you can lower your risk of a whole range of cancers at once'. "It's very, very hot".
