20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer's hopes of clinching his record sixth title at the BNP Paribas Open were dashed after he slumped to defeat against seventh seed Dominic Thiem of Austria in the final of the tournament in California on Monday.

Thiem went on to win 13 of 14 points to give himself a commanding 4-1 lead. he would go on to claim the second set and send the game into a decider.

"I lost my two first 1000 finals and here I won it, it feels nearly worth a grand slam".

He had been set to play longtime rival Federer in the semifinals. He went on to break Federer's serve with a forehand victor.

In the day's first quarter-final on Friday, Federer quickly seized control of his match against Hubert Hurkacz by breaking the 67th-ranked Pole's serve in the fifth game, Efe news reported.

Federer explained the nature of his performance and how the milestone of winning his 100th ATP tour title in Dubai a few weeks ago took the sting out of this defeat.

Having reached his first Masters final in 2017 and his first Grand Slam final in 2018 only to be denied by Nadal, 2019 has now provided the 25-year-old with the biggest title of his career and the next staging post in his career courtesy of a win over perhaps the greatest the game has seen - quite a statement. He can hit through heavy conditions, forehand and backhand, and I think, time and time again, for most players, that is a secret how to achieve greatness on clay.

But baseline specialist Thiem kept his composure and levelled the match in the second, gaining traction by extending rallies and unleashing a torrent of high-kicking serves to keep Federer off balance.

Given the statistical advantage that Federer enjoys over Thiem on hard court, I do think the prices are about right for tonight's match, and there can not be any pre-match recommendation on this basis.

Raonic rescued the only break point in the second set at 2-1 down before going on to force another tiebreak.

"I got a little bit lucky when I saved the break points early in the match". Things changed dramatically in Indian Wells where Dominic surprised playing very good and solid tennis.

"I had to get used to it".

"The last two games were awesome, I was a little bit nervous to serve it out".
