Meteorologists call storms like this one a "bomb cyclone", a winter hurricane that forms when the barometric pressure drops 24 millibars in 24 hours.

"Heavy rains.isolated flooding and severe weather will accompany these thunderstorms as they march fairly quickly eastward", the weather service predicts.

Among the areas expected to get hit hard: the central-northern Plains, the upper Midwest and the Rockies.

FEMA Region 8 - which covers Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming - advised residents to have a 3-day supply food/water, battery-powered radio, flashlights and portable chargers on hand for the expected power outages associated with the wind gusts up to 75-80 miles per hour in the region.

Travel: The National Weather Service for Salt Lake City said on Wednesday it might be better to wait until Thursday to start traveling. According to FlightAware, more than 1,400 Wednesday flights have already been canceled. Morning rain in Denver quickly turned to snow by afternoon with the potential of 10 inches of powder to fall in the state's capital, with even more in the mountains and plains to the east. The majority of disruptions were for flights in and out of Denver International Airport.

Fargo-Moorhead is on the edge of an area of southeast North Dakota and west-central Minnesota that could see up to 4 inches of rain and freezing rain before snow moves in on Thursday.

Snow showers will push through the Beehive State Wednesday, according to Dan Guthrie of KSL Weather. Blizzard conditions could spread into the Northern Plains region by Thursday morning.

The latest update from the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service is now calling for up to two feet of snow in some areas, along with unsafe winds and risky travel conditions. Several additional states are under a high wind warning, flood warning and winter storm warning, NWS reported.

The Weather Channel has dubbed it "Winter Storm Ulmer", and says it's bringing risky conditions, high winds, and possible structural damage, such as power outages and downed trees. "Widespread blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero at times".
