Former El Paso Congressman and failed senatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke has officially made the announcement: he's running for president in 2020. Ted Cruz in the November elections, appears on the cover of the April issue of Vanity Fair standing on a dirt road in the desert in his home state.

Beyond a previously announced event in Waterloo, Iowa on Saturday, O'Rourke is expected to visit other towns in eastern Iowa, traditionally a Democratic stronghold, Politico said.

Early opinion polls on the 2020 race have consistently ranked O'Rourke in the top tier of contenders, behind former vice president Joe Biden, who has not yet said whether he is running, and US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a 2016 presidential contender who announced his 2020 candidacy last month. In an encouraging sign, however, a third of respondents said they did not know enough about him to have an opinion.

Prior to his Senate bid, O'Rourke had kept a relatively low profile as a three-term congressman with little name recognition.

"I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents", he wrote.

Of late, O'Rourke has tried to distance himself from some left-leaning candidates, such as Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, whom Trump has derided as "socialists". I tell O'Rourke that perhaps he's simply too normal to be president.

In 2018 speculation began that Mr O'Rourke may decide to run after his campaign for the US Senate proved his worth.
