Inspired by the activism of Swedish 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, the youth organization has quickly become one of the most visible movements to plead for serious, immediate action on climate change.

She says the science on climate change is clear, and the time for action is now. Adults are not the only people in the world, and if they're building a future we don't want then we need to take action.

"We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation - especially communities of color, disabled communities, and low- income communities are already disproportionately impacted by climate change". While we support, in principle, any student who wishes to make a stand about climate change, we have to concern ourselves with our practical responsibility to keep safe the young men and women who have been entrusted into our care.

Friday's rallies are expected to be one of the biggest worldwide actions yet.

Young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, a prominent voice in the fight against climate change, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

The latest strike is expected to be much larger than the first, held last month, when around 600 Scots were among around 15,000 youngsters across the United Kingdom who skipped school to protest.

Thunberg said on Twitter that nearly 100 countries will be involved.

Elsewhere in New Zealand, Wellington students showed up in force, and of course, they wielded many excellent signs.

"They're making a bigger contribution and learning more by doing this strike than anything they could possibly do at school", she told 3AW.

You have failed us in the past.
