Warning over anti-ageing blood injections

FDA warns against 'young blood' transfusions FDA: Infusing yourself with young blood is pointless, dangerous

Taking a young person's plasma and infusing it into an older person to ward off ageing - a therapy that's fascinated some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley - has no proven clinical benefit, the Food and Drug Administration said. Furthermore, we urge patients and their health care providers to report any adverse events related to treatment with plasma from young donors for aging or related indications to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program. The sellers suggest that doses of young plasma can treat conditions ranging from normal aging and memory loss to dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, or post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the FDA.

The FDA officials, however, "strongly discouraged" consumers from pursuing the therapy outside clinical trials under appropriate institutional review and regulatory oversight. People are infused with blood plasma donated from young people.

Those claims, however - and any other information about Ambrosia Health - have been scrubbed from the website.

Plasma is the liquid part of blood, and holds proteins to help blood clot. The benefits of plasma have always been recognized, especially in trauma settings or in patients whose blood is unable to clot due to medications or certain illnesses.

Ambrosia purportedly enrolled people in the first US trial created to determine what happens when the veins of older adults are filled with blood from younger people. Swapping plasma comes with serious risks, including allergic reaction, circulatory overload, acute leg injury and infectious disease.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the FDA warned that infusion of blood plasma from young donors into older individuals should not be assumed as effective or even safe.

Ambrosia, the best known company providing infusions of blood plasma from younger donors, made a decision to stop treating patients following FDA's warning. "Of those, 81 participated in its clinical trial".

The FDA said that the promoted benefits of such plasma transfusions had not been clinically proved, and noted that this type of procedure could potentially cause harm. Some "bad actors" have gone as far as charging thousands of dollars for these young-blood infusions.

They note that as well as not having any recognized benefits for the conditions these companies say they are treating, people having any kind of plasma treatment could experience side effects.

A growing number of clinics across the United States offer infusions of plasma specifically from young donors-peddled as anti-aging treatments and cures for disease.

The FDA warned that not only are the benefits unproven, but that the risks of young blood transfusions may be significant.

FDA approval of a treatment typically requires human trials before companies can make a specific health claim about a product.
